Sharp liner, bleached brows and black lipstick are in.

It’s out with the pretty and in with the punk as moody make-up is tipped to take centre stage this AW22. Spotted up and down the runway, several shows paid homage to the 1990s grunge trend – opting for flattened matte skin, strikingly dark lipstick and chunky, textured hair.

'To me, modern grunge isn’t dirty, grubby, old grunge,' says hair legend, Sam McKnight. 'It’s more considered than that.' Take your cue from 16 Arlington, where McKnight hand painted contrasting colours (including burnt orange, indigo and black) onto hair for a 'floating feathered' effect. Elsewhere, at Blumarine, black lipstick stole the show while bold bleached brows made a comeback at Richard Quinn. Over at Molly Goddard, messed up sky high ponytails and sharp liner were the order of the day.

'It’s cool, uncontrolled and ever so chic,' says Dominic Skinner, renowned make-up artist and ambassador for MAC, who admits that he 'loves a little grunge.' A re-emerging beauty look that has roots in the 1990s, Skinner points out that all trends are a conversation and a rebellion against, but also a continuation of, what has come before.

'In the past few years, we’ve seen a real focus on bright and fresh make-up with a wink of Euphoria,' says Skinner. 'So, it would only make sense that this modern take on a 1990s style would venture off into the dark side. Goth and grunge, here we come.'

'The easiest way to tap into the grunge girl trend is to add a sweep of black eye kohl to your waterline,' recommends Skinner. 'Wear your usual eye make-up and apply a good coat of MAC Feline Eye Pencil. Let it melt through the root of your lashes and blend it out with a finger for a smudgy, grungy, fashiony eye look.'

If you prefer a bold lip over a heavy eye, that’s fine, too. Skinner’s top tip? 'It’s always better to play it down and focus on one feature.' However, this doesn’t mean you should forget about the rest of your make-up. 'If you go with a deep dark lip, then plump up the lashes to compliment it, or if you go full on with the eye, tag them with a sheer berry lip balm.'

'As for your base make-up, skin should take a backseat,' says Claire Mulleady, Givenchy national make-up artist. 'Keep it fresh, bare and natural to create the ultimate cool grunge girl look.'

If you thought a grunge make-up look was limited to dark greys and blacks, think again. At Hardware LDN, artists from the New York Makeup Academy applied washes of mustard around the models’ eyes. 'Soft rust and mustard shades add a sultry and feminine edge to a typical grunge look,' says Claire Perez, founder of New York Makeup Academy. 'For lips, a burgundy over black will make it more wearable.'

Skinner adds that key colours and tones to look out for include 'different shades and textures of grey, cool purples, deep damsons and tea stains. These are all colours for the AW22 season.'

Proving its versatility, hair legend Sam McKnight confirms that there are several hair styles and colour trends that feed into this edgy aesthetic. 'It’s a dark root, chopped and razored layers, dyed black, washed-out colours. If bleached, it must appear uncared for, despite this being very deliberate in real life.'

As for products and maintenance, 'The modern grunge girl washes her hair but may use a wax or leave-in conditioner to grunge it up,' adds McKnight who recommends using his Lazy Girl Dry shampoo and Cool Girl Texturiser.
